In accordance with clause 2, article 2 of the Cosmetics Act, the term “functional cosmetics” means:

    1. Products that help with skin whitening

  4. Are the efficacies of health functional foods different from those of a medicine?

Many misunderstand that ‘health functional foods’ treat diseases. Their function is not to treat or prevent diseases but to maintain and improve normal bodily functions and health by activating physiological functions.

  5. What is a functional ingredient?

A health functional food is a product made using functional ingredients, which their standards and specifications are postulated in the 「Health Functional Food Codex」 by MFDS and categorized into ‘announced’ ingredients that are available to everyone who seeks them or ‘individually approved’ that must be sanctioned by MFDS to use.

    1) Announced ingredients

Refer to the functional ingredients on the 「Health Functional Food Codex」 by MFDS. If they conform to the requirements specified in the manufacturing standard and specification, no additional procedure is necessary for approval. Currently, there are 83 ingredients registered including vitamins, minerals, fiber and more.

    2) Individually approved ingredients

Refer to the functional ingredients not registered on the 「Health Functional Food Codex」 and individually approved by MFDS. These can only be used if they are recognized as functional ingredients through safety, functionality and other testing as requested by the company, which must be authorized as well to manufacture and market the products. Currently, there are approximately 140 individually approved ingredients.

  6. What is the difference between announced and individually approved health functional food?

Announced health functional foods refer to those made with functional ingredients registered on the 「Health Functional Food Codex」 by MFDS. Individually approved foods are those made with functional ingredients not registered on the Codex but individually approved by MFDS based on the safety, functionality and other information submitted by the applicant. HemoHim is one of representative individually approved health functional food.

  7. What is the difference between health functional food and health food?

All food has certain functions. They may be: 1. Nutrition pertaining to life or health (primary function), 2. Preferential function such as taste, smell and colors (secondary function), 3. Body modulating functions that help health maintenance and enhancement (tertiary function). A health functional food is a product with set focus on the third function. A food that is known to be good for health doesn’t necessarily makes it a health functional food. A health functional food is a product manufactured according to the specified procedures in relevant regulations and its finished good bears the ‘Health Functional Food’ text or certificate mark. In this aspect, ‘health food’, ‘natural food’, and other similar names are dissimilar from ‘health functional food’.
